Description
Neuronetics is a privately-held company developing non-invasive treatments for chronic psychiatric and neurological disorders, including depression, based upon neuromodulation technology.
Products / Services
The company's NeuroStar TMS Therapy System treats major depression in patients who have not responded to, or are intolerant of, drug therapy. NeuroStar TMS Therapy is a forty minute outpatient procedure administered five times a week for four-six weeks. It does not require anesthesia or sedation, and can be performed in a psychiatrist's office. The Precise Data Management System (PDMS) custom software program is designed to streamline TMS treatment data. Additionally, the SenStar Treatment Link is a single-use patient interface device attached to each treatment coil.
Technology / Differentiation
Using highly focused, MRI-strength magnetic field pulses, the NeuroStar system repetitively stimulates nerve cells located in an area of the brain linked to depression to help normalize neurotransmitter function. The PDMS includes: wireless connectivity with multiple NeuroStar systems, patient summary reports, diagnosis and current medication documentation, and referring physician communications and tracking. Neuronetics' SenStar has four key functions: contact sensing to ensure treatment coil is positioned correctly, magnetic field confirmation to ensure patient receives desired treatment, surface field cancellation to reduce stimulation of the scalp and serving a hygiene barrier from patient to patient.
Market / Customers
Depression affects at least 14 million American adults each year. Researchers estimate that by the year 2020, depression will be the second leading cause of disability worldwide. Each year, over 30,000 people in the U.S. commit suicide, 60% of which had previously suffered from depression. Depression has no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries, though women are more often diagnosed with the condition. About two-thirds of individuals who have experienced an episode of depression will have at least one additional episode in their lives. The market for antidepressant drugs is worth $12.5 billion, yet nearly 30% of patients with depression do not benefit from-or are intolerant of-antidepressant therapy.
Status
As of May 2008, NeuroStar is pending FDA approval for the treatment of depression and marketing clearance. If cleared by the FDA, NeuroStar will be the first and only non-invasive, non-systemic treatment for major depression.
