Description |
| Inovio Biomedical Corporation, formerly Genetronics Biomedical Corporation, is a biomedical company developing medical therapies for cancer using its Electroporation Therapy (EPT) technology. The therapy aims at selective killing of cancer cells and local ablation of solid tumors, while preserving healthy tissue. |
| Products / Services |
Inovio's lead product, MedPulser Electroporation Therapy System, is in premarketing studies for head and neck cancer, and skin cancer in Europe, as well as in phase III pivotal study for recurrent head and neck cancer in the United States. The system delivers electrical pulses to tumors injected with the generic drug bleomycin. The company is also developing devices for the delivery of DNA for vaccinations and gene therapy.
| Technology / Differentiation |
| Electroporation Therapy utilizes electroporation in the delivery of drugs and genes directly into human cells. Briefly applying an electric field to a living cell causes a transient permeability in the cell's outer membrane. This permeation is manifest by the appearance of pores across the membrane. After the field is discontinued, the pores close within minutes without significant damage to the exposed cells and with the therapeutic molecules trapped inside the target cells. |
| Market / Customers |
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US, topped only by heart disease. Solid tumors, many suited to localized treatment using Inovio's electrochemical tumor ablation therapy, represent over 85% of all cancers. With 87% of cancer deaths in people aged 55+, the aging developed-world population suggests increasing cancer cases and deaths.
