Interventional Imaging, Inc. (I3MRI) has developed a novel approach to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) inside the body. The company's proprietary catheter technology is combined with MRI for use in the detection and treatment of coronary artery disease and atrial fibrillation.
Products / Services
I3MRI's catheter is modeled after conventional cardiac catheters, but contains microcoils and electronics capable of communicating with MR scanners. I3MRI's product for the treatment of atrial fibrillation is a MR-compatible catheter with proprietary microcoils and RF capabilities for ablating pulmonary veins. I3MRI's solution for coronary artery disease provides information on plaque location and composition, particularly pertaining to vulnerable plaques entirely contained within the vessel wall without blocking arteries and undetectable by conventional angiography or fluoroscopy.
Technology / Differentiation
I3MRI's core technology includes proprietary microcoils that generate images of vessel wall morphology when inserted into an artery or vein. The catheter communicates with an MRI scanner to generate high-resolution, cross-sectional images of the vessels, aiding clinicians in early detection of cardiovascular disease and therapy guidance. I3MRI has overcome many challenges experienced by interventional MR companies in the past, including poor coil design, materials, and heating issues.
Market / Customers
The market for atrial fibrillation is largely unaddressed; over 5 million people worldwide, including approximately 2.3 million people in the United States, are currently diagnosed with the condition. The AF annual market for minimally invasive, closed chest procedure revenues is expected to reach $1.5 billion by 2008. Coronary artery disease (CAD) afflicts nearly 12.6 million Americans and is responsible for over one million heart attacks each year in the U.S. Presently, there are no available technologies that consistently and precisely identify the location and composition of vulnerable plaques in a living patient. The vulnerable plaque market is largely undeveloped at this time but has $1+ billion potential.
Status
I3MRI is a development stage company initially focused on the imaging catheter and the RF ablation catheter. These tracking and imaging capabilities can be used for other devices, including stent deployment catheters or treatment delivery catheters. The Global Cardiovascular Innovation Center of the Cleveland Clinic recently approved a grant to Interventional Imaging to complete I3's next critical milestone tests.
