Description
Nanogen develops and commercializes molecular diagnostics products and tests for the gene-based testing market.
Products / Services
The company's products include real-time PCR reagents, the NanoChip 400 electronic microarray platform and a line of rapid, point-of-care diagnostic tests.
Technology / Differentiation
The heart of Nanogen's technology is the NanoChip System, which consists of an electronic microarray, a silicon chip capable of rapid identification and precise analysis of biological molecules, and an instrument that "reads" the chips. Designed specifically to fit into the workflow of clinical diagnostic laboratories, the NanoChip 400 is an automated, highly sensitive system that allows for the detailed examination of a patient sample for the presence of specific genetic sequences, such as variations or mutations in DNA or the presence of foreign DNA like that from a virus.
Market / Customers
Research and molecular diagnostics laboratories and point-of-care markets in North America, Europe and Asia.
Strategy
The company seeks to establish a leadership position as an advanced diagnostic company in the two fastest growing in vitro diagnostic (IVD) markets - clinical laboratories and point of care providers. A key element of Nanogen's business model is its ability to provide both content -in the form of molecular tests and assays -and open platforms capable of supporting that content; i.e., the razor/razor blade model.
Status
From late 2004 until present, Nanogen has been engaged in an acquisitions strategy designed to broaden its product and customer base. The company has successfully integrated four organizations, resulting in healthy revenue growth, and is currently consolidating certain functions in order to improve bottom line performance. In 2007, Nanogen expects to submit the NanoChip System for FDA 510K clearance.
