| Description |
|
PEAK Surgical is developing tissue dissection systems based on proprietary plasma technology with distinct advantages over currently used surgical instruments. |
 |
| Products / Services |
The PEAK Surgery System is founded on two major components: the PULSAR Generator, which supplies unrivaled pulsed plasma radiofrequency energy; and the PEAK PlasmaBlade, a low temperature disposable cutting and coagulation tool that offers the exacting control of a scalpel and the bleeding control of traditional electrosurgery without the extensive collateral damage. The user interface of the PULSAR Generator is based on direct feedback from surgeons and operating room staff. Each PlasmaBlade communicates with the PULSAR Generator (and vice versa) to program recommended settings, to monitor Patient Return Electrode connectivity and to make slight power adjustments based on target tissue impedance.

| Technology / Differentiation |
| The pulsed waveforms from the PULSAR Generator produce plasma-mediated and highly controlled electrical discharges through extensively insulated electrodes on the hand-held PEAK PlasmaBlade. Because the radiofrequency is provided in short on-and-off pulses and the blade contains highly insulated electrodes, the PlasmaBlade cuts tissue at half the temperature required to operate conventional electrosurgery devices (and can work at temperatures as low as 50 degrees C). This temperature reduction results in reduced heat transfer and associated thermal damage to surrounding tissues, as compared with traditional electrosurgical devices. The PlasmaBlade can also cut through all types of soft tissue (including skin, fat and muscle) and dissect tissue in wet or dry surgical fields. The PlasmaBlade has been shown to reduce bleeding by sixty percent compared to scalpel usage, while providing the same positive wound healing profile of minimal scarring and inflammation; it also improves surgical incision healing and strength compared with traditional electrosurgical devices. |

| Market / Customers |
PEAK Surgical is exploring applications of its technology across numerous surgical fields beyond general surgery, including cardiothoracic, gynecologic, neurosurgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery. The company believes the technology may have applications in more than 2 million surgical procedures each year. Electrosurgery represents a $1 billion market in the United States.

| Status |
| On July 24, 2008, PEAK Surgical announced that the FDA has granted the company 510(k) clearance to market its PEAK Surgery System for use in general surgery. To date, PEAK Surgical has raised more than $29 million in three rounds of private financing for its development and commercialization efforts; the company most recently closed a Series C financing in February 2008 that raised $21 million. |
