Description
Torax Medical, Inc. is developing an implantable device to strengthen the esophageal sphincter for the treatment of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Products / Services
The LINX System is designed to prevent gastric reflux by augmenting the Lower Esophageal Sphincter, the body's natural anti-reflux barrier. The LINX device consists of a series of miniature magnetic beads, linked together to form a "bracelet" around the Lower Esophageal Sphincter. The attractive force of the magnetic beads provides support, which is designed to restore the normal barrier function of the defective sphincter.
Technology / Differentiation
Torax has pioneered a new technology platform called Magnetic Sphincter Augmentation (MSA) which may be applied to a variety of conditions throughout the body. The LINX procedure is performed by a surgeon using a minimally invasive surgical technique, called laparoscopy. The device is placed around the distal esophagus, just above the stomach, in the area of the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES). Once the device is placed it will begin working immediately; magnetic attraction between the beads helps to keep the lower esophageal sphincter closed to prevent reflux, but will open to allow swallowing or the release of higher gastric pressures. Following the procedure, under physician guidance, patients should be able to resume normal diet and will typically resume normal activities in less than a week.
Status
The company commenced pivotal clinical trials of its technology in April 2009 and announced that it had raised $18 million in venture capital in June 2009.
