| Description |
|
Keren Medical is a privately-held medical device company developing suturing technology to facilitate anastomosis (the connection of two structures, either naturally or via surgery) in laparoscopic, robotic, and open surgeries. |
 |
| Products / Services |
The company's novel, patent-protected suturing technology provides the basis for a variety of complex surgical operations, including radical prostatectomy and colonic anastomosis. In the former case, the Keren anastomotic device enables surgeons to reconnect the urethra and bladder with increased ease and accuracy. The patient experiences an earlier recovery of postoperative continence. Keren Medical has also developed an open surgery disposable anastomosis device for cylindrical organs.

 |
| Technology / Differentiation |
| Keren Medical's product is a disposable device designed for threading six absorbable sutures between the bladder neck and the urethral stump. The device incorporates two independent sets of hollow Nitinol needles: one set for the sutures' entry through the bladder neck and a second set for passing through the urethral stump. The surgeons control each set independently, which allows for more accurate and safer suturing. Since laparoscopic anastomosis often results in prolonged postoperative urine leakage, urinary incontinence and outflow obstruction, products based on Keren's proprietary technology enable rapid, water-tight anastomosis. |

| Market / Customers |
Prostate cancer is the most prevalent malignancy in men and second most common cause of cancer death, with an estimated 186,320 new cases in the United States for 2008. Keren's technology is intended for patients with clinically localizable prostate tumors, which can be treated with laparoscopy and robotic prostatectomy. The U.S. Minimally Invasive Surgical Instruments and Laparoscopes Market generated revenues worth $497.9 million in 2002, with the revenue likely to reach $709.8 million in 2009.

 |
| Status |
| Keren Medical recently presented its technology at the American Urological Association's Annual Conference and at the Annual Boston-Haifa Life Sciences Initiative. |
