The NeuroStar TMS Therapy system delivers highly focused MRI-strength magnetic field pulses that stimulate neurons in areas of the brain linked to depression. It is a safe and effective non-invasive treatment for patients with major depressive disorder that have not responded to prior antidepressant therapy. NeuroStar TMS Therapy can easily be performed as an outpatient procedure in psychiatrists' offices and does not require anesthesia or sedation; patients remain awake and alert during the procedure and can return immediately to normal activities. The NeuroStar system consists of a mobile console, a patient chair, a single-use SenStar Treatment Link and proprietary software that facilitates the management of the physician's NeuroStar practice. Neuronetics also provides its customers with a suite of services that include on-site training, technical service, reimbursement support and practice development support.

Technology / Differentiation
The NeuroStar TMS Therapy system produces brief, powerful pulses of magnetic energy that can be aimed at the left prefrontal cortex, an area of the anterior brain demonstrating abnormal function in patients with depression. The magnetic field stimulates target brain tissue in a focused manner, bypassing the hair, skin, and skull and minimizing impact on brain tissue not involved in mood regulation. The magnetic field pulses induce the flow of electrical charges within the brain, leading to the activation of neurons. Neuronal stimulation in this manner has been demonstrated to increase blood flow, glucose metabolism, and promote the release of mood-regulating neurotransmitters (i.e., serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine).

The World Health Organization has estimated that, by the year 2020, major depression will be exceeded only by ischemic heart disease in global disease burden. An estimated 16.2% of the U.S. population (over 30 million people) have suffered from major depression in their lifetimes. In spite of multiple courses of antidepressant treatment, many patients with major depression obtain little to no relief from drug therapy. Even with symptomatic improvement, tolerability remains a considerable clinical problem due to the various side effects associated with antidepressant medications. Consequently, there is a large, unmet need for an safe and effective depression therapy free from undesirable systemic effects. Neuronetics is currently targeting subsets of the 40,000 psychiatrists practicing in the United States, including those with large outpatient practices, early adopters of new treatments, and psychiatrists with prior experience with in neuromodulation technologies (e.g. electroconvulsive therapy). The company's technology also presents opportunities for teaching hospitals, general hospitals, and stand-alone psychiatric hospitals.

Status
Neuronetics announced on October 8, 2008 that its NeuroStar system is the first and only non-systemic and non-invasive TMS therapy system to receive FDA clearance for the treatment of depression, specifically in patients who have not previously benefited from antidepressant regimens. The company's direct sales and marketing team is actively selling the NeuroStar system throughout the U.S.
