Description
Seno Medical Instruments is a cancer focused company. It aims at the commercialization of a new modality in cancer screening and diagnosis: laser opto-acoustic imaging. This technology enables functional imaging that detects the presence and progression of cancerous tumors
Products / Services
Seno's patented technology, optoacoustics, uses dual-wavelength lasers to pulse light into tissue. If a tumor is present, the lesion absorbs this light energy and creates a 3-D sound wave. The resulting acoustic wave is imaged in real-time.Seno's product will be used as an adjunct to mammography.Seno's functional imaging device detects lesions 5X smaller than mammography and distinguishes between malignant (cancer) and benign (non-cancer) lesions non-invasively. It reveals the essential cancer indicators; the presence or absence of blood and the existence of angiogenesis--blood vessels grown by the body to feed a cancerous lesion.
Technology / Differentiation
Seno's imaging modality uniquely informs the user (physician/researcher) whether a lesion is cancerous by revealing the two basic causes of cancer: the growth of blood vessels, angiogenesis, and the absence of oxygen.Seno targets all solid cancerous tumors. Seno's device operates at the push of the button to capture the image and provide information for cancer diagnosis. Seno's devices are portable and can be used for other functional applications such as prostate, ovarian or cervical cancers.
Market / Customers
The target market for the breast cancer diagnostic technology is estimated to be $5.9 billion dollars in North America alone.
Status
Pre- prototypes and core patents on opto-acoustic technology have been acquired and two other patents have been licensed for future patents. This will allow for potential follow-on applications, including imaging for the earliest detection of cancer of the ovary, bladder, prostate, colon and melanoma as well as unstable plaque (cardiovascular). The company has also launched its First-Ever Commercially Available Opto-Acoustic Small Animal Imaging Research System.
