Description
EndoSphere is developing a platform of endoscopically implantable devices for the treatment of metabolic diseases, including obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Products / Services
EndoSphere's devices boost the natural functions of the duodenum, including control of appetite and regulation of glucose production. The first products now in trials exert effects by virtue of their physical presence, slowing the passage of food to increase signaling. Later products may include more active forms of intervention, including release of bioactive materials and electrical stimulation of neurons.
Technology / Differentiation
EndoSphere's technology works naturally to cause weight-loss without the cost and complications of surgery. Patients notice only that they feel full sooner and do not feel the need to snack between meals. There are no symptoms of nausea, pain or discomfort that are commonly experienced with other technologies. EndoSphere's products are in human trials outside the United States and are not yet approved for sale.
Market / Customers
Obesity is a metabolic disorder affecting 70 million people in the U.S. alone. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that worldwide obesity levels will rise to 700 million in 2015, from a current value of 400 million. Obesity is commonly associated with type 2 diabetes, which currently affects 7.8% of the American population (or approximately 23 million people, according to the American Diabetes Association.
Funding
The company expects to close a $7-10 million Series A round in the next 6 months.
Status
EndoSphere has commenced human testing. The company successfully completed its initial trial outside the U.S. and is now preparing for more extensive trials in Switzerland. It expects to gain approval to market the devices outside the U.S. within 18 months and FDA approval within four years.
