| Description |
Lerner Medical Devices, Inc. uses its proprietary UV phototherapy technology to develop, manufacture and market medical devices for the home treatment of skin conditions and diseases. |
| Products / Services |
The company's portfolio includes the Levia Home-Use PhotoTherapy System for the phototherapeutic treatment of scalp and small-area psoriasis. The company aims to become a market and technology leader in developing and supplying high-intensity, targeted phototherapy devices for the treatment of psoriasis and other photoresponsive skin diseases (including eczema, seborrheic dermatitis and vitiligo). The potential benefits of the company's phototherapy systems include: less expensive and time-consuming treatment options for psoriasis patients, as well as the lack of detrimental side effects associated with prolonged steroid use or major organ toxicity hazards associated with systemic and/or biological treatment options.
| Technology / Differentiation |
| Lerner Medical utilizes advanced HIFOL (High Intensity Fiber Optic Light) optical technology to provide phototherapeutic approaches to treatment of skin conditions. Employing a patented quartz fiber-optic UV light delivery mechanism, the Levia Targeted PhotoTherapy System delivers concentrated and targeted doses of ultraviolet light (UVB) to psoriasis-affected skin at a therapeutic intensity only previously available in physician office systems. |
| Market / Customers |
Over six million people in the United States suffer from psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by red scaly patches on the skin that may be associated with itchiness, pain, and bleeding. About 80% of these individuals have a mild or moderate skin disease for which the company's products are indicated. More than $5 billion is spent annually on prescription drugs and physician services in the United States to treat psoriasis. According to a survey from the National Psoriasis Foundation (2002), many psoriasis patients were unsatisfied with treatment and often ceased their therapy. Patients, physicians and third-party payers are actively looking for a better way to treat psoriasis.
