| Description |
|
Access Pharmaceuticals specializes in cancer and supportive care products that are largely based in proprietary nanopolymer technologies. Access has received FDA approval for and markets MuGard™, a viscous, mucoadhesive rinse that provides a protective, soothing coating to the oral mucosa for the management of mucositis, a frequent side-effect of cancer therapy for which there is no established treatment. The Company’s lead development candidate for the treatment of cancer is ProLindac™, a nanopolymer DACH platinum prodrug that utilizes a safe, water-soluble nanoparticulate system to deliver more drug to the tumor while reducing delivery to normal tissue, thereby increasing effectiveness and decreasing toxic side-effects; ProLindac™ has successfully completed a European Phase II trial in patients with ovarian cancer and will soon undergo combination studies. While Access’s primary focus is on oncology, the Company’s drug delivery technologies also yield candidates that address the problem of poor intestinal absorption of drugs by exploiting the body’s own vitamin B-12 absorption system; Cobalamin™ is Access's proprietary nanopolymer oral drug delivery technology that transported from the gut to the bloodstream by such a receptor-mediator process. This later-stage biotechnology company is also currently developing products for the oral delivery of insulin and human growth hormone (HGH). |
