Description
The goal of LIFEBRIDGE Medical (LIFEBRIDGE Medizintechnik AG) is to provide mechanical emergency cardiopulmonary support to significantly more patients than are receiving such support today.
Products / Services
The LIFEBRIDGE B2T ("Bridge to Therapy") is a miniaturized and compact heart-lung machine for emergency cardiopulmonary support (ECPS). The device can be used within minutes in order to stabilize the circulation of the acutely affected patient as quickly as possible, thereby preventing further impairments to organ functions and saving the patient's life.
Technology / Differentiation
LIFEBRIDGE B2T's features include: size, weight and semi-automatic priming; de-bubbling functions; and innovative safety features such as active air management, flow and level monitoring. It includes a touch screen, which enables the user to monitor the system status during ECPS. The device can accommodate a maximum blood flow of six liters/minute.
Market / Customers
One in ten patients experience life-threatening cardiogenic shock (acute cardiovascular failure), which often occurs spontaneously. Standard heart-lung machines can temporarily stimulate natural circulation, yet their cumbersome nature renders them useless in emergency situations. Other current options are aggressive medications (i.e. lysis, inotropes), partial or limited life support systems (i.e. CPR, Impella) and the re-positioning of so-called "recovery" systems (i.e. Intra-aortic balloon pulsation). Experts from the fields of perfusion (cardio technology), interventional cardiology, heart surgery, anesthetics and intensive-care medicine accompany the continuous LIFEBRIDGE B2T development process, which is closely in harmony with practical clinical considerations.
Status
The LIFEBRIDGE B2T is used in 20+ hospitals in Germany, Italy, Austria and Turkey. Since CE approval in Jan 2008 more than 100 clinical cases have been completed successfully The company has not achieved U.S. FDA approval for its technology.
