Description
CytoSorbents has developed hemoperfusion technology to treat conditions such as sepsis and kidney disease by removing toxins and deleterious components from the blood. Sepsis can occur when the immune system creates too much cytokine, and kills 250,000 of the 1,000,000 U.S. citizens who develop it each year. CytoSorb™, the Company’s lead product, is designed to reduce levels of cytokines as an adjuvant to hemodialysis, significantly improving odds of recovery from sepsis. CytoSorb™ works by utilizing blood-compatible polymer beads that are equipped with appropriately-sized pores that capture toxic substances from the blood while allowing smaller and larger substances to pass through and around the beads. In March 2011, this later-stage medical device company achieved European CE Mark approval for CytoSorb™.
Technology / Differentiation
CytoSorb acts by reducing the level of cytokines, which trigger dangerous inflammation and immune system responses. Through the reduction of inflammatory mediators, the odds of recovery should be significantly improved. The first indication planned is an adjunctive therapy to the current standard of care for patients suffering from sepsis. Sepsis is characterized as a complex syndrome that is difficult to define, diagnose or treat. Sepsis can be caused by either cytokine production that increases to a level that escapes the local infection site and enters the blood or when an infection such as bacteria enters the blood stream and triggers the immune response releasing large levels of cytokines. Victims of septic shock experience fever, falling blood pressure, myocardial suppression, headache, dehydration, renal failure, and respiratory arrest. Body organs fail and death may result from lethal septic shock. In turns out that the inflammatory responses can be more dangerous than the original inciting stimulus. Cytosorbents believes that CytoSorb reduces the amount of cytokines in the blood allowing a more normalized immune system response to fighting the primary infection, while also making other prescribed therapies more effective and producing better patient outcomes.

Betasorb is designed as an adjunctive treatment to traditional high-flux hemodialysis for the treatment of chronic kidney failure. The National Institutes of Health estimates that Medicare spends $19 billion annually (6% of Medicare expenditures) for the care of 450,000 patients with end-stage kidney failure. The National Kidney Foundation estimates that 20 million people in the U.S. suffer from chronic kidney disease (CKD), a condition in which the kidneys fail to fully perform their normal functions including: regulating body water and chemicals such as sodium, potassium, phosphorous, and calcium; removing drugs and toxins introduced into the body; releasing hormones into the body in order to regulate blood pressure, produce red blood cells, and promote strong bones. The BetaSorb technology targets middle molecular weight toxins not cleared well by hemodialysis. The marker is Beta2Microgloulin. Studies show that reduced levels of Beta2Micoglobulin lead to a reduction in morbidities like amyloidosis, hospital stays, and lowers mortality rates compared to patients on high-flux hemodialysis.
Status
The company holds 25 patents in the U.S., some of which have foreign counterparts and additional patent applications pending worldwide, some of which have foreign counterparts. The patents cover material, process and application of the polymer technology. The company continues to acquire and develop its IP through its own research and development program as well as collaboration with key researchers in academia.
