Description
Alvine Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is a privately held biopharmaceutical company focused on developing innovative therapies to treat autoimmune/inflammatory diseases. Alvine's lead drug candidate, ALV003, is an orally administered, mixture of two proteases for the treatment of celiac disease. Celiac disease is a systemic autoimmune disease triggered by the ingestion of gluten in susceptible individuals; approximately 1%-2% of the population is affected. Celiac disease causes serious health consequences including osteoporosis, certain forms of cancer, anemia, liver disease, and kidney disease. The majority of celiac patients continue to experience continued symptoms and intestinal inflammation even on an attempted gluten free diet (GFD), yet currently there are no approved pharmaceutical treatment for celiac disease.

ALV003's proposed MOA is to degrade gluten locally in the stomach, thereby decreasing the immune response to gluten. ALV003 targets the glutamine and proline residues that are common in gluten.

A phase 1 study demonstrated ALV003's ability to degrade 1,000mg gluten in a complex meal in the stomach within 30min. In the ELISpot study, treatment of gluten with ALV003 abrogated the gluten-induced immune response. ALV003 is currently in phase 2a clinical trials.

The company's primary goal is to translate new knowledge about immune system pathogenesis into innovative therapeutic products.
