Description
AcuMEMS is a medical device company developing and commercializing patented wireless sensor technology for glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the US. The iSense System, comprising a portfolio of implantable and disposable MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems) sensors that couple to a handheld monitor, is currently under development to wirelessly measure intraocular pressure (IOP). This new capability automates the tonometry process, and enables 24-hour and continuous monitoring of IOP by the glaucoma patient to a prescribed targeted pressure by the ophthalmologist.
Products / Services
The iSense System automates the tonometry and glaucoma treatment process through a simple, easy-to-use ambulatory platform. Direct IOP measurements can be obtained on-demand with a handheld monitor that wirelessly interrogates an implanted sensor communicating with the anterior chamber of the eye. The iSense System transforms disease management of glaucoma by facilitating 24-hour and continuous monitoring of IOP, as well as patient compliance with medical therapy. It obviates current IOP measuring devices in portability and accuracy.
Technology / Differentiation
MEMS is revolutionizing ophthalmology by enabling miniature sensor products that detect and monitor true IOP. Wireless communication between a MEMS sensor and an external power system will dramatically change our interaction with the intraocular environment. In the iSense System, a dynamic IOP measurement system is being developed that is based on a direct measurement principle and allows IOP changes to be continuously tracked by the glaucoma patient and ophthalmologist. No other technology, existing or emerging, provides this advantage.
Market / Customers
Glaucoma can cause damage to the eyes optic nerve and result in vision loss. Whether you develop glaucoma depends on the level of IOP your optic nerve can tolerate without being damaged. Prescription medication (50% of the $2.5 billion spent annually in US) remains the most common treatment for glaucoma, despite the significant problem of patient non-compliance. Over two million Americans have glaucoma today and the numbers are expected to grow to three million by the year 2020.
Status
AcuMEMS patented technology is currently in development. Wireless ocular sensing has been demonstrated in vivo using the iSense prototype system. The Company seeks approximately $7.5 million in Series A financing to complete development and demonstrate clinical utility of its first product for glaucoma surgery patients, as well as to fund regulatory processes in Europe and the US. Accordingly, an opportunity exists for key investors to partner with a proven group of entrepreneurs to build a highly successful company.
