Description
Ascension Orthopedics researches, designs, develops and markets small joint implants for the treatment of osteoarthritis, post-traumatic and rheumatoid arthritis. The company focuses on providing hand surgeons and their patients with revolutionary orthopedic devices and the most comprehensive education and customer support available for the treatment of small joint disorders.
Products / Services
Ascension Orthopedics began product development in Austin, Texas in 1996 and received the FDA's PMA approval for its first product in 2001 for an innovative pyrolytic carbon total joint replacement for the MCP (Knuckle) joint of the hand. The company has since increased its joint replacement product line to include implants for the shoulder, elbow, wrist, fingers and toes. In addition to joint replacements, Ascension Orthopedics offers trauma products to treat bone fractures occurring in the hand, arm, foot and ankle.
Technology / Differentiation
In June 2006, Ascension received FDA approval for the first PyroCarbon implant for the foot. The Ascension PyroSphere(R) implant is designed for the fourth and fifth tarsometatarsal joints of the foot and is intended for people suffering from the debilitating effects of arthritis. The Ascension PyroSphere(R) is a revolution in TMT arthroplasty, providing a new option to foot surgeons. The PyroSphere(R) is manufactured from the patented material, On-XR Carbon, which offers characteristics superior to those of other pyrocarbon materials and is available only to Ascension Orthopedics. The material has shown improved wear qualities compared to other industry standard materials, thus enhancing the life of the implant.
Market / Customers
The company has expanded its product platforms to include arthroplasty, trauma, and tissue regeneration. Ascension currently offers more than ten arthroplasty products, a complete elbow trauma set, and a tissue regeneration portfolio that includes a nerve conduit and an adhesion prevention product. Ascension's entry into the foot market marks its continued growth in the upper and lower extremity markets.
Status
In January 2008, Ascension announced it had secured $21 million in a Series D financing. This new round of funding will be used primarily to expand the current product line and enhance the company's product marketing and distribution network. Frazier Healthcare Ventures is leading this Series D financing as the majority investor.
