| Description |
NeuroMetrix is a medical device company focused on the neurological complications of diabetes. Its products consist of medical devices and consumable biosensors. The Company believes that there are significant unmet needs in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic neuropathies. It is uniquely positioned to address these needs due to its decade-long experience in developing devices that measure and alter peripheral nerve function.
Diabetes is a worldwide epidemic with an estimated prevalence exceeding 350 million people. Within the United States there are over 25 million diabetics with an annual treatment cost exceeding $100 billion. The primary burden of the disease is in its long term complications including nerve disease or diabetic neuropathy which is estimated to affect over 60% of diabetics.
Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a systemic nerve disease that is worse in the feet and lower legs. It may lead to loss of sensation in the feet, severe pain in the feet and legs, and increased risk of falling. DPN is the primary trigger for diabetic foot ulcers which may progress to foot amputation. Diabetics have a 15% to 25% lifetime risk of developing a foot ulcer and 15% of foot ulcers lead to amputation. Foot ulcers are among the most expensive complications of diabetes, with a typical cost of $5,000 to $50,000 per episode. Early detection of DPN is particularly important because there are no treatment options once the nerves have degenerated. NeuroMetrix has launched its initial diabetes product, NC-stat DPNCheck, a diagnostic tool providing an inexpensive, fast, accurate, and quantitative test of sural nerve conduction which is a standard biomarker for DPN. The Company is now developing SENSUS, a therapeutic device involving nerve stimulation designed for treating painful diabetic neuropathy. Product launch is projected in late 2012.
The Company’s legacy neurodiagnostics business accounts for nearly all its revenue and is managed to optimize its cash contribution and not for growth. This business was restructured in conjunction with the Company’s shift in strategic focus toward the more attractive opportunities in diabetes care. |

| Market / Customers |
Products are marketed domestically and outside the US to primary care physicians and specialists. NeuroMetrix created the market for point of care nerve testing.
|
 |
| Strategy |
Drive commercial adoption of NC-stat DPNCheck in US and international markets. Expand products to include SENSUS, a pain therapy device. Initiate clinical studies to further validate clinical and economic benefits. Obtain coverage and payment for NC-stat DPNCheck. Manage legacy business for cash.
