Description
Cytomedix, Inc. is a biotechnology company specializing in the development, production, licensing, and distribution of medical devices for the production of autologous cellular therapies at the point of care. It has a broad portfolio of patents in multiple areas. Autologous therapies use a patient's own body products to facilitate healing and tissue regeneration. Currently, the Company sells three proprietary, patented devices for use in the treatment of chronic, non-healing wounds and orthopedic surgical applications. In addition, Cytomedix, Inc actively pursues arrangements to both license its patented technology to companies addressing markets outside wound care as well as license its products to sell into the wound care market.
Products / Services
The AutoloGel System produces an autologous platelet rich plasma gel for the treatment of wounds. The Angel Whole Blood Separation System produces platelet rich plasma and platelet poor plasma suitable for use in orthopedic surgery. The activAT system produces activated autologous thrombin from a small sample of platelet poor plasma collected during blood processing with the Angel device.
Technology / Differentiation
The AutoloGel System provides a safe and rapid process to separate platelets from a small sample of the patient's blood and produce a growth factor formulation suitable for managing wounds. The separation process takes 60 seconds to complete, and the proprietary formulation has been demonstrated to be effective in multiple published clinical studies. The Angel Whole Blood Separation device produces platelet rich plasma (platelet concentrate) and platelet poor plasma from a sample of whole blood. It is a convenient automated system which maintains an aseptic environment producing cellular components suitable for use during surgery. The device is capable of processing from 40 cc to 540 cc, and it offers unmatched flexibility to produce platelet formulations matched to the patient and clinical requirements
Market / Customers
Cytomedix platform technologies address numerous multi-billion dollar markets including wound care, ortho-biologics,and cosmetic surgery. The U.S. market for advanced wound care products currently exceeds $2 billion, and a significant unmet need still exists to heal chronic wounds at a rate greater than 50%.
Competitors / Substitutes / Alternatives
There are a half dozen significant direct competitors. However, the convenience, flexibility, and range of indications provided by Cytomedix is unmatched.
Strategy
Cytomedix will continue to build upon a growing clinical and scientific foundation, utilize a robust clinical evaluation process, and build customer advocacy through key opinion leaders. The company will continue to assess and utilize established distribution channels, leverage and expand EU distribution gained via Sorin products, and seek collaboration partners in orthopedics, veterinary medicine, and other significant markets. Development projects are underway to improve the value offering and reduce COGS, and the company is focused on building pharmacoeconomic data in support of ongoing reimbursement
