Description
MINRAD International is an acute care medical device and pharmaceutical firm. Its pharmaceutical line produces inhalation anesthetics including enflurane, isoflurane and sevoflurane. The medical device products incorporate patented real time image guidance technologies which enable medical professionals to improve the accuracy (+/- 1mm at 1 meter) of minimally invasive interventional procedures while reducing radiation exposure for both patients and medical staff. The company has a conscious sedation drug/drug delivery system under development which combines its inhalant anesthetics as analgesics with a proprietary delivery system, Micro-Flow Titration, to administer nano-liter quantities of drug directly into a patient breathing circuit while servo-controlling the agent concentration to insure delivery does not exceed analgesic levels.
Products / Services
Anesthesia & Analgesia: Compound 347 (enflurane USP), Terrell (isoflurane USP), and Sojourn (sevoflurane): and MR tested Laryngoscope handles and blades. Real Time Image Guidance: SabreSource imaging system; Light Sabre(tm) (Syringe, Bone Biopsy, Aspirating Needle; Spinal Needle, Core Tissue Biospy, IDET Introducer) Veterinary: Inhalation Anesthetic Attain (isoflurane USP) and Cardell® Monitors.
Technology / Differentiation
MINRAD's inhalation anesthetics are generic. The company's imaging technology differ from alternative approaches in that they are: performed in real-time; have an accuracy claim of +/-1 mm at 1 meter; have a line of Light Sabre companion instruments (bone and core tissue biopsy, spinal and aspirating needles, procedure syringes, and a catheter introducer) which illuminate when they are following the precise angle of approach to sub-surface treatment or biopsy site, accuracy claim of +/- 3mm at 100 ml depth; the system is portable and does not require a dedicated operator and can be installed in 2 minutes; and the total cost is under $20,000. The company's conscious sedation technology does not employ addictive or teratogenic substances and facilitates earlier patient discharge.
Market / Customers
MINRAD focuses on acute care specialists in anesthesia, pain management, neurosurgery, orthopedics and interventional radiology. 80% of present revenue is from international markets through its exclusive partners including but not limited to E. Merck (Japan and No. Europe), Novartis (veterinary UK), PiSA (Mexico). The company is also an OEM supplier to Baxter International.
Competitors / Substitutes / Alternatives
Inhalant Anesthetics: Abbott Laboratories and Baxter International Image Guidance: Sofomor-Danek (Medtronic, Inc.) and Brain-Lab Conscious Sedation: Nitrous Oxide and intravenous benzodiazepine
Strategy
The company is committed to the development and commercialization of "Products of Hope" & acute care devices or pharmaceuticals that will dramatically improve outcomes for patients and medical staff.
