| Description |
Protein Polymer Technologies, Inc. (PPTI), a Delaware corporation with corporate offices and laboratories located in San Diego, California, is a development-stage biotechnology company engaged in the research, development, and production of bio-active devices to improve medical and surgical outcomes. Since 1992, PPTI has focused primarily on developing technology and products to be used in the repair, augmentation, and regeneration of tissue ñsoft tissue augmentation products; surgical adhesives and sealants; matrices for wound healing and tissue engineering; and drug delivery formulations. |
| Products / Services |
PPTI is currently developing three advanced surgical products: a urethral bulking agent for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence, a dermal contouring agent for use in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, and an adhesive nucleus replacement for the repair of spinal discs damaged due to injury or aging.
| Technology / Differentiation |
| PPTI's technology platform consists of proprietary biomaterials, formulated from unique rDNA polymers composed of repetitive protein sequences. This integration of biological and physical product components provides the opportunity for optimized clinical performance and patient outcomes. Through genetic engineering, PPTIs scientists are able to tailor the physical structure and biological characteristics of protein polymers to achieve required biomaterial properties. Protein polymers are synthetic proteins created "from scratch" through chemical DNA (gene) synthesis and produced in quantity by bacteria through large-scale fermentation. As a result, protein polymers are capable of uniquely combining specified biological, chemical, and physical properties of natural proteins which make up the body's own tissues, while containing no human or animal components that could potentially transmit or cause disease. They can also be processed into a wide variety of different materials (such as films, fibers, adhesives, and gels), while retaining these properties. PPTI pioneered the development of this technology and now holds 26 U.S. patents on the design, composition of matter, and production of protein polymers, with corresponding international applications in major markets. |
| Strategy |
The company is developing the incontinence and dermal augmentation products independently. This work is well underway, and these and other follow-on products share similar technology and product properties. In addition, the company is pursuing multiple additional routes for commercial development. The company has established a comprehensive license and development agreement with Genencor International for the use of its biomaterials and technology to develop, manufacture and commercialize products for industrial markets. Spine Wave is a private, venture-funded company formed in 2001 to develop and commercialize PPTI's technology for certain spinal and orthopedic applications. Spine Wave contracts with PPTI for product development services associated with the exclusively licensed technology. PPTI also will receive royalties on the sales of products derived from the technology.
