Description
Theragenics Corporation operates two business segments: its brachytherapy seed business and its surgical products business. The brachytherapy business manufactures and markets its premier product, TheraSeed, a palladium-103 based device, I-Seed, an iodine-125 based device, and related products and services. Physicians implant these 'seeds' during a one-time, minimally invasive procedure, usually performed on an outpatient basis, primarily to treat patients with localized prostate cancer. Its surgical products business manufactures and distributes wound closure, vascular, and interventional products.
Products / Services
Theragenics' brachytherapy seed segment offers TheraSeed, a rice-sized palladium-103 device used to treat solid localized tumors, such as prostate cancer. This segment also manufactures and distributes I-Seed, an iodine-125 based medical device for the treatment of prostate cancer and related brachytherapy products and services. Its surgical products segment offers Wound Closure products through its subsidiary CP Medical, and Vascular Access products through its subsidiary Galt Medical. The CP Medical Wound Closure and Medical Products segment manufactures and supplies sutures, cardiac pacing cables, brachytherapy needles/spacers/sleeves and other related medical products for wound closure, cardiac pacing, and the general, dental, cosmetic and veterinary surgery markets.
Technology / Differentiation
TheraSeed devices are implanted throughout the prostate gland in a minimally invasive surgical technique, with transrectal ultrasound guidance. The radiation emitted by the seeds is contained within the immediate prostate area for the purpose of killing the tumor while attempting to spare surrounding organs of significant radiation exposure. The device is best suited for solid localized tumors.
Market / Customers
The company sells its products to the oncology, brachytherapy, interventional cardiology, interventional radiology, wound closure, general surgery, dental, cosmetic and veterinary surgery markets. Doctors have used TheraSeed devices to treat over 130,000 men for prostate cancer.
Competitors / Substitutes / Alternatives
Theragenics main competitors in brachytherapy are North American Scientific, Best Medical, Core Oncology, and IsoRay Medical. Its wound closure and vascular access divisions have large companies such as divisions of Tyco and J & J who are players in the same market, but Theragenics Galt Medical and CP Medical, the subsidiaries which make up the surgical products business, both concentrate on niche markets within their larger markets.
Status
In February 2008, Theragenics announced consolidated financial results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2007.
