Description
Coloplast, headquartered in Humlebaek, Denmark, develops, manufactures and markets ostomy devices, urology products, continence care devices, wound care and skin care products.
Products / Services
Ostomy is a procedure in which the intestinal outlet has been surgically rerouted through the abdominal wall. A surgical opening, called a stoma, is created through the abdominal wall; bodily wastes pass through this opening and are collected by Coloplast's devices. Easiflex is a two piece ostomy bag intended for individuals with active lifestyles. Additionally, the Corsinel elastic hernia support underwear supports a parastomal bulge resulting from the stoma. Coloplast's newest ostomy product, SenSura, is a double-layered adhesive enhancing flexibility, erosion resistance, comfort, and ease of removal. In the area of wound and skin care, Coloplast has developed the dressing Biatain-Ibu to reduce pain in chronic wounds while managing the exuding fluid. The company offers an extensive urology and continence care portfolio, which includes: intermittent catheters, urine bags, urisheaths, urinary slings, pelvic organ prolapse grafts and penile implants.
Technology / Differentiation
Coloplast's Aris product line offers minimally invasive, ultra light urinary slings that provide resistance to traction. The soft edges of the Aris sling facilitate easy passage during implantation, while its low elasticity (similar to that of collagen fibers) allows for accurate tension free adjustments. The Aris sling with T.O.T (transobturator) introducers is suitable for obese patients and for repeat incontinence surgery patients; this technology avoids the retropubic space, which can result in reduced recovery time sand minimal scarring. The company's Peristeen anal irrigation system consists of a complete control unit with a pump, water bag, and rectal catheter; even patients with low dexterity can use the system to treat their anal incontinence and constipation. Coloplast develops products composed of soft yet durable materials to reduce incontinence and provide anatomic support to the pelvic floor, such as the Conveen Drip Collector and Novasilk (TM) mesh. Coloplast also markets three product lines of inflatable and malleable penile prostheses.
Market / Customers
The urinary incontinence market is set to continue to grow over the next 6 years, reaching over $2.5 billion in 2012, a 68% increase from 2006. Meanwhile, the global ostomy market is estimated at $1 billion annually; as the developer of the world's first disposable ostomy bag, Coloplast is expected to generate a significant portion of this revenue. Since Coloplast's products are used for a variety of applications, the company will experience growth in these and several other markets.
Status
Coloplast purchased Mentor's urology unit in June 2006, thereby adding general and surgical urology products to its continence care portfolio. The company then expanded its urinary sling offerings when it acquired assets related to the Levera Male Incontinence Therapy from Caldera Medical in November 2007.
