Description
Conceptus manufactures and markets an innovative and proprietary non-incisional permanent female birth control procedure.
Products / Services
Conceptus' Essure is a permanent birth control device that serves as an alternative to tubal ligation that does not require incisions or general anesthesia. The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting, and women who have the procedure usually resume regular activities within 24-48 hours.
Technology / Differentiation
The Essure system uses a soft and flexible micro-insert that is delivered into a woman's fallopian tubes to provide permanent birth control by causing a benign tissue in-growth that obstructs the fallopian tubes. The Essure micro-insert obstruction prohibits the egg from traveling through the fallopian tubes, thereby preventing fertilization and pregnancy. The Essure procedure has been demonstrated in a small portion of the women undergoing clinical studies to be 99.74% effective based on 5 years of follow-up.
Market / Customers
A study by the U.K. research firm, Piribo, estimated the global market for hormonal contraceptives at $5 bllion in 2005 and was approximately $7 billion in 2006. The current market in the U.S. for estrogen and testosterone products is approximately $2.5 billion and for oral contraceptives approximately $3.0 billion.
Status
Conceptus recently reported that net sales for the first quarter of 2008 were $21.1 million, up 53% over net sales of $13.8 million for the first quarter of 2007 and up 14% over net sales of $18.6 million for the fourth quarter of 2007.
