Description
Abiomed is a global technology leader focused on recovering hearts and saving lives. The company's portfolio of heart support and recovery products and services offer healthcare professionals an array of choices across a broad clinical spectrum. From the catheterization lab to the surgical suite, together with interventional cardiologists and surgeons, Abiomed is dedicated to providing the most advanced medical technologies to heart patients, with the ultimate goal of heart recovery and improved quality of life.
Products / Services
The company sells two models of its temporary heart assist product: the BVS 5000 Biventricular Support System and the newer AB5000 Circulatory Support System. In Europe, Abiomed offers the IMPELLA RECOVER minimally invasive cardiovascular support systems under CE Mark approval. The IMPELLA 5.0 and 2.5 are in pilot studies in the United States. Other IMPELLA devices are not yet available for sale in the United States. The Company's AbioCor Implantable Replacement Heart is now available under a Humanitarian Device Exemption granted by the United States Food and Drug Administration. The AbioCor is intended for end-stage heart failure patients whose other treatment options have been exhausted.
Technology / Differentiation
The BVS and AB5000 systems each consist of single-use external blood pumps and cannulae and a reusable pneumatic drive and control console. Both are capable of assuming the full pumping function of a patient's failing heart, and are designed to provide either univentricular or biventricular support.
Market / Customers
BVS and AB5000 are sold in the US through direct sales and clinical support teams. ABIOMED conducts its international sales efforts through distributors and by selling directly in selected European markets. ABIOMED's European headquarters are based in Aachen, Germany.
Strategy
ABIOMED is focused on its Bridge to Recovery Ventricular Assist Devices and new technologies for earlier circulatory support in the catheterization lab.
Status
The BVS 5000 and the AB5000 are currently approved by the FDA for temporary use while the patient's heart is allowed to rest, heal and recover. The company's AbioCor Implantable Replacement Heart is now in clinical trials. It is a heart replacement device that replaces the failing ventricles of a patient's diseased heart and takes over the heart's blood pumping function.
