| Description |
VIRxSYS is a private biotechnology company that focuses on the development of a novel lentiviral vector platform technology for the treatment of serious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and cancer. |
| Products / Services |
VIRxSYS' first target disease for application of its vector is HIV/AIDS. The Company's technology provides biological control of HIV infection by "turning the virus against itself" using an HIV lentiviral vector, VRX496. This HIV vector contains "molecular scissors" that destroys HIV genetic material.
| Technology / Differentiation |
| The current challenge for gene therapy is to develop vectors (vectors are vehicles that deliver genetic material into cells) that deliver genes efficiently to human cells without toxicity. VIRxSYS' HIV-based lentiviral vector is designed to achieve this goal, and overcomes several important hurdles including high-efficiency gene transfer, transfer of genetic material stably into dividing and quiescent cells, and a reduced risk of immunogenicity or insertional oncogenesis (cancer). |
| Market / Customers |
The market for drugs to treat HIV/AIDS is in excess of $4 billion annually and is expected to surpass $10 billion before the end of the decade. The cost of treating cancer is multiples of these amounts.
| Strategy |
VIRxSYS' near term objective is to continue to refine and develop its platform technologies in order to (i) become a leading developer of gene therapy products for the treatment of HIV, (ii) be a leading developer of vaccines against infectious diseases, with the initial focus being HIV, and (iii) develop its vector platform for other diseases and applications including cancer, genetic diseases and functional genomics.
