Description
Acquired by Inverness. Cholestech is a leading provider of diagnostic tools and information for immediate risk assessment and therapeutic monitoring of heart disease, diabetes and certain liver diseases.
Products / Services
Cholestech manufactures the LDX System, which includes the LDX Analyzer and a variety of single-use test cassettes.
Technology / Differentiation
The LDX System, which is waived under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), allows healthcare providers to perform tests with a single drop of blood from a fingerstick within approximately six minutes. The system measures and monitors blood cholesterol, related lipids, glucose and liver function. The LDX System can also provide the Framingham Risk Assessment from the patient's results as measured on the lipid profile cassette.
Market / Customers
The LDX system is primarily used by physician office labs, usually in primary care and cadiology practices. The company sells the LDX System in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia and Latin America. There is currently a worldwide installed base of about 20,000 LDX Analyzers.
Competitors / Substitutes / Alternatives
Abbott Labs, Bayor Corp., Roche
Status
On Nov. 17, 2005, Cholestech announced an agreement with Boule Diagnostic International, a Swedish manufacturer of hematology systems, for the development and distribution of a Complete Blood Count test system. Under the agreement, the two companies will collaborate on the development and commercialization of a point-of-care CBC system that is CLIA-waived. Cholestech expects to commercialize the CBC system in 2007. Currently, there are no CLIA-waived CBC systems in use in the U.S.
