NxStage Medical, Inc. develops, manufactures and markets dialysis systems for the treatment of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and acute kidney failure. |
| Products / Services |
The company's principal product is the NxStage System One portable kidney dialysis machine. The system is FDA cleared to deliver multiple therapy options including a specific indication for home hemodialysis, and delivers these therapies in short intermittent schedules, long continuous schedules or anything in between.
| Technology / Differentiation |
| The System One is easily configured for chronic care or critical/acute care settings, and can be routinely used in treatment of chronic renal failure, acute renal failure and fluid overload. |
| Market / Customers |
More than 1.7 million people worldwide, including 453,000 in the U.S. (in 2003), suffer from End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). Yet fewer than 30% of ESRD patients in the U.S. currently have a functioning kidney transplant. As a result, nearly 325,000 U.S. patients receive routine dialysis treatments to treat their kidney failure. In addition, more than 200,000 people annually in the U.S. suffer from acute kidney failure. The costs of treating ESRD patients are more than $20 billion annually in the U.S.

| Funding |
| Cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments at March 31, 2006 were $49.7 million. |
| Status |
| The NxStage System One has been cleared by the FDA and is currently only available in the US. The company announced in April 2006 that it has surpassed the milestone of 500 patients on home hemodialysis therapy using its System One. During the first quarter of 2006, 167 net new patients began treatment with NxStage's System One and 97 dialysis centers were using the System One portable dialysis machine for home hemodialysis therapy. |
