Description
HealthTronics provides specialty healthcare products and services to the urological communities, including urologist partnership opportunities, surgical and capital equipment, maintenance services offerings, and anatomical pathology services.
Products / Services
HealthTronics' product portfolio includes the Lithodiamond Ultra (for the disintegration of kidney and ureteral stones, cystocopy, retrograde utereroscopy, and stent placement/removal) and the Revolix TM surgical laser (for the minimally invasive outpatient treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), bladder tumors, and other urological conditions). The company's TotalCare (TM) program is a collection of integrated products and services designed to serve the needs of urologists, including billing and scheduling services, monitoring of regulatory requirements, trained personnel, distribution of medical equipment, technical support and TotalRadTM image-guided radiation therapy.
Technology / Differentiation
The laser included in every RevoLix device has a wavelength of two microns, which provides twice the strength of the well-established Holmium laser. Since the RevoLix lasers preferred chromophore (a molecule causing conformational change when hit by light) is water instead of hemoglobin, all passes of the laser are equivalently effective. RevoLix lasers make clean and shallow cuts while maintaining excellent hemostasis, affecting only tissue two millimeters away from its fiber. The RevoLix Duo adds lithotripsy to the RevoLix platform's myriad applications, making it the only urological laser applicable to soft-tissue surgery, open surgery, laparoscopy and lithotripsy to date. Meanwhile, the Lithodiamond Ultra manipulates the company's "source select" shock technology, which features an interchangeable treatment head allowing operators to switch from electromagnetic therapy to electrohydraulic ("spark gap") therapy during stone disintegration procedures. Its rotating therapy head enables access to both sides of the patient (anterior and posterior); coupled with the integrated isocentric C-arm plus image chain providing peak image quality and head-to-toe coverage, this allows operators access to the entire urinary tract. Patients can lie down for the duration of the procedure, which lasts 20-30 minutes and does not necessitate general anesthesia. The company's technologies are designed for easy transport and set-up and come conveniently equipped with large-text display and straightforward menu-guided user interfaces.
Market / Customers
Lithotripsy represents a $600 million market; approximately 387,000 procedures are performed annually and this number is increasing 2% each year due to increased demand for non-invasive procedures, aging populations, and rising obesity rates. Benign prostatic hyperplasia affects 50% of men over age sixty and represents a $650 million market growing 10-12% annually. Prostate cancer is currently the foundation of a $5 billion industry, with over 186,000 new cases projected for 2008.
Status
HealthTronics announced that it had acquired the anatomical pathology laboratory service provider, UroPath, LLC, for $7.5 million on July 21, 2008. It also announced its acquisition of Advanced Medical Partners, Inc. (AMPI)-a urological cryosurgery service provider-in April 2008. The company projects annual revenues of $160-162 million.
