| Description |
Delcath is a specialty biopharmaceutical company that develops drug delivery technology that specifically targets particular organs with high doses of therapeutics, thereby avoiding whole body exposure and harmful systemic side effects. Delcath's technology can be used with a variety of drugs including chemotherapeutics, biologics, antivirals, and antibiotics. This makes the system adaptable for a variety of applications, including treatments for cancer, hepatitis, and infections, as well as the targeting of diseased organs. |
| Products / Services |
Delcath's Percutaneous Hepatic Perfusion (PHP) system uses its proprietary drug delivery technology to target delivery of drugs to the liver. Particularly, PHP has been used for the delivery of chemotherapeutics to the liver in cases of liver cancer, namely metastatic melanoma. Also, delivery of antivirals to the liver promises to help maintain and fight hepatitis since the virus predominately replicates and resides there.
| Technology / Differentiation |
| The Delcath System, or Percutaneous Hepatic Perfusion (PHP), offers a new regionalized approach for the treatment of unresectable hepatic malignancies in which the drug Melphalan is administered via the hepatic artery and the venous effluent of the liver is collected and filtered using a percutaneously placed catheter and filtration system. |
| Market / Customers |
Approximately 240,000 cases of liver cancer (secondary and primary) are diagnosed yearly in the U.S. alone, with 2 million cases diagnosed worldwide. This translates into an approximate $4.8 billion U.S. market and a $36 billion worldwide market.
| Status |
| PHP is in phase III clinical trials for metastatic melanoma of the liver. PHP is in phase II clinical trials for secondary liver cancers, including adenocarcinomas and neuro endocrine cancers, as well as primary liver cancer. Preliminary data thus far has shown a nearly 70% response rate over a variety of liver cancers, with significant and durable response in some patients. Delcath currently has a renewed 5-year Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) in place through 2012 with the National Cancer Institute. |
