Description
Aureon Laboratories\' mission is to enable personalized patient care through predictive pathology. It is a privately-held organization applying its \'systems pathology\' technology to develop tests for cancer care and facilitate bio-pharmaceutical research and development.
Products / Services
Using patient biopsy tissue, Prostate Px+ predicts the extent of prostate cancer progression and the likelihood of prostate cancer recurrence post-surgery, which enables patients and physicians to make the most informed treatment decisions. Specifically, Aureon\'s technology platform generates and analyzes an integrated, digital view of clinical findings, tissue micro-anatomy and tissue molecular pathology to determine which combination of features predicts specified individual clinical outcomes.
Technology / Differentiation
The basis for the predictive power of Prostate Px + is Aureon\'s proprietary systems pathology platform, comprised of several elements. First, the Aureon PathoMetrix (TM) is an automated \"machine vision tissue image analysis system\" that uses advanced image processing algorithms to segment and measure notable histological and/or pathological elements. The features extracted from the images are then integrated with clinical and molecular information to assess disease severity and to predict disease progression. Next, the M-Plex(TM) fluorescently tags individual antibodies and analyzes the antigen-antibody complexes of interest utilizing spectral imaging. Finally, Aureon has ventured into the domain of artificial intelligence with its Discovery-Path (TM) technology, which uses multivariate analysis to \"learn\" from patients\' data and improves the ability of physicians to provide accurate prognoses.
Market / Customers
According to The American Cancer Society, there will be approximately 186,320 new cases of prostate cancer and 28,660 deaths from this disease in the United States by the end of 2008. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men, behind lung cancer. Prostate Px+ is intended for men at low-to-intermediate risk; this group represents most of the newly diagnosed cases.
Status
After introducing Prostate Px+ at the American Urological Association\'s annual meeting in May 2008, Aureon later received two U.S. patents approving the use of its \'Systems Pathology\' approach in predicting the occurrence of any medical condition (December 2008). The company also announced its collaborative research endeavor with the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in 2008, which will apply Aureon\'s systems pathology platform in the analysis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tissue. The goal of the study is to quantify and evaluate biomarkers associated with disease progression and survival.
