BioVex's lead product candidate in clinical development is OncoVEX, a modified oncolytic version of HSV that is capable of growing in and killing tumor cells while leaving normal cells unharmed. Following direct injection of OncoVEX into solid tumors the virus replicates and as it does so it releases the cytokine which further aids the development of an anti-tumor immune response. OncoVEX is currently undergoing a Phase IIa clinical trial in malignant melanoma.
