Products / Services
AEterna's focus is on developing and marketing its luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) antagonist treatments. Cetrotide (R) (cetrorelix acetate), on the European market since 1999 and launched in the United States in 2001, is used to prevent premature ovulation in women undergoing in-vitro fertilization (IVF). AEterna is currently conducting clinical trials to determine the therapeutic effects of Cetrorelix (cetrorelix pamoate) in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and endometriosis. Ozarelix is in Phase 2 clinical trials for use in tumor therapy as well as BPH. AEterna's other products include the orally-administered Perifosine, which slows the proliferation of various cancers by inhibiting the signaling peptide Akt.

Technology / Differentiation
LHRH is naturally produced in the brain to control the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH), which then regulates ovulation and egg maturation in women. Cetrotide (R) binds to LHRH receptors, slowing the release of LH and delaying the LH surge (by up to four days) that stimulates ovulation before the patient's ova can be retrieved for IVF. Treatment with this product can be accomplished within one monthly cycle with few injections and adjustable dosing. Cetrorelix and Ozarelix serve similar functions in men with prostate conditions; these products bind to LHRH receptors, rapidly suppress testosterone production and slow the proliferation of prostate cells. These therapies, unlike LHRH agonists, do not cause the preliminary hormone surge associated with significant side effects. Ozarelix is a controlled aggregate of the LHRH antagonist peptide in saline formulation, which provides a simple cost-effective production cost.
