| Description |
Xenoport, Inc. is focused on developing products that harness the body's intrinsic transport systems to improve the oral absorption, distribution and pharmacokinetics of drugs. |
| Technology / Differentiation |
| XenoPort's proprietary Transported Prodrug technology utilizes the body's natural mechanisms for actively transporting nutrients through cellular barriers. Our scientists identify specific, high-capacity nutrient transporter proteins found in cells that line the gastrointestinal, or GI, tract. Using this information, they chemically modify the structure of a suboptimal drug to create a Transported Prodrug that utilizes these transporters to gain efficient absorption into the bloodstream through active transport. Once in the blood stream, our Transported Prodrugs are engineered to split apart, releasing the drug and natural substances that generally have well-studied, favorable safety characteristics. |
| Strategy |
XenoPort is currently applying its technology to off-patent drugs to provide new, patentable compounds with improved medicinal properties; and the company plans to work collaboratively with pharmaceutical companies to improve the pharmacokinetic properties of their proprietary drug candidates.
| Funding |
| Since its inception, XenoPort has raised over $127 million in private venture funding. XenoPort's investors include AIG SunAmerica Ventures, Alejandro Zaffaroni, Arch Venture Partners, CMEA Ventures, Frazier Healthcare Ventures, HBM BioVentures AG, Lilly BioVentures, Lombard Odier & Cie, Lotus BioScience Ventures, Novartis BioVentures Ltd., Orbimed Advisors, Skyline Ventures, The Invus Group, Venrock Associates and WestRiver Capital. |
