Gen Probe Incorporated is engaged in the development, manufacture and marketing of rapid, accurate and cost-effective nucleic acid probe-based products used for the clinical diagnosis of human diseases and for screening donated human blood. The Company has received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approvals for more than 50 products that detect various infectious microorganisms. In February 2002, the FDA approved the Biologics License Application (BLA) for the biochemical test (assay) used to screen donated blood for human immunodeficiency virus (type 1) (HIV-1) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). At the time, the assay was the only FDA-approved NAT assay available for screening donated blood and is utilized to screen over 72% of the United States donated blood supply for HIV-1 and HCV. |
