Description
Kosin Technologies has developed a universal irrigation system facilitating endoscopic evaluation and irrigation in the ureter and renal pelvis. Irrigation devices help to maintain a clear visual field for urologists by displacing blood, stone fragments, and cellular debris as well as stretching the lumen.
Products / Services
The company's I.V. Piggyback Irrigating System is designed for controlled irrigation during ureteroscopy and other urological procedures to prevent erratic stone migration and increased intra-renal pressure.
Technology / Differentiation
The mounted modular endoscope valve enables the physician to manually control the flow of irrigation fluid during urological surgery and/or endoscopic procedures. The urologist operates the device using the finger and thumb of the hand holding the endoscope, which leaves the other hand available for stone extraction, lithotripsy, or biopsy.
Market / Customers
More than one million cases of urolithiasis (kidney stones) are diagnosed annually in the United States, with the total number of Americans suffering from kidney stones steadily increasing over the past twenty years. Kidney stone incidence is higher in the warmer parts of the U.S., presumably due to increased fluid loss. A study published in July 2008 suggests that global warming could increase the incidence of this condition to 30% in the most affected areas and cause an additional 1.6 to 2.2 million cases by 2050. Kosin's device is marketed to and intended for use in hospitals, clinics, and laboratories.
Status
Kosin Technologies received FDA 510(k) clearance to market its I.V. Piggyback Irrigating System in January 2004.
