Description
Nanospectra Biosciences is a clinical stage, private company commercializing AuroLase Therapy for the selective and precise thermal destruction of solid tumors. Nanospectra is currently conducting an US IDE pilot study in patients with head and neck cancer and a second pilot study in prostate cancer in Mexico, both to be completed in mid 2012.
Products / Services
The potential benefits of AuroLase Therapy include: (i) the precise elimination of irregularly shaped or invasive tumors; (ii) the potential treatment of otherwise non- resectable tumors; and (iii) a minimally invasive therapy that avoids significant damage to surrounding healthy tissue and structures. To date, extensive toxicological testing in combination with preclinical and human studies has not indicated any level of toxicity attributable to the therapy. Our therapeutic device may be used in combination with, and could increase the effectiveness of, standard chemotherapy and radiation.
Technology / Differentiation
There are various forms of ablation therapies today that directly deposit a destructive level of energy into tissue, requiring the precise identification of the tumor boundaries to be effective. In contrast, AuroLase Therapy utilizes particles that are delivered intravenously and accumulate in the tumor (and not in adjacent normal tissue). The area is then illuminated with a near-infrared laser. The particles will selectively absorb this near-infrared energy, converting the light into heat to thermally destroy the tumor without significant damage to adjacent healthy tissue. AuroLase Therapy can thermally ablate irregularly shaped tumors while minimizing damage to healthy adjacent tissue and preserving nearby critical structures. For example, AuroLase Therapy may allow the focal treatment of prostate cancer, treating only the tumor and reducing the side effects associated with current therapies (e.g., reducing erectile dysfunction and incontinence).
Market / Customers
AuroLase Therapy is broadly applicable to nearly all solid tumors. The cancer markets we target currently include head & neck (>650,000 annually), prostate (>910,000), brain (>225,000, including primary and metastatic), and lung (>1.4Million). While many of these patients are successfully treated, many do not respond to current therapies. Some successfully treated patients also suffer severe side effects such as erectile dysfunction and/or incontinence. Nanospectra is also licensing and manufacturing AuroShells for other nanoparticle-based medical technology companies who are looking to commercialize non-cancer therapies. This market is still being defined but could be lager than cancer.

Status
Nanospectra is conducting a pilot study in patients with head and neck cancer under a U.S. Investigation Device Exemption (IDE), and a second pilot study in prostate cancer in Mexico, both scheduled to be completed in mid 2012. NS is also beginning a third study with CTCA (Cancer Treatment Centers of America) in early 2012. NS is also currently scaling up GMP manufacturing facility to supply other medical companies (under licensing arrangements) who are utilizing AuroShells for clinical/commercial applications.
