Description

UAMS BioVentures and its Technology Licensing Office (TLO), business accelerators developed by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), were established in 2002 to facilitate the startup of new business enterprises, based on UAMS technology, and to enhance the growth of job opportunities in Arkansas. UAMS is interested in translating its research endeavors into products that benefit human health.

Program/Products/Services

UAMS BioVentures runs a full service technology licensing and established incubator program which currently has 15 start up projects under active management. The endeavors of UAMS BioVentures also include: developing an interactive network between UAMS, Arkansas Children's Hospital, the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System and global industries; facilitating technological transfers; and supporting state-of-the-art education and training programs that promote Arkansas' medical and biotechnology development. BioVentures also organizes and sponsors regular life science and biomedical engineering private equity roundtables that connect its risk capital members with the new technologies and ongoing investment opportunities under management in the incubator.

Points of Differentiation

Through the efforts of BioVentures, UAMS-generated products have led to companies with 350 jobs, a total annual payroll today of $15.7 million and salaries that average $49,638 a year. The technologies in the UAMS intellectual property portfolio are available for licensing and commercialization.

Strategy/Focus

Client companies seek:venture capital, institutional investor awareness, M&A advisors, and strategic / corporate partners. UAMS Bioventures is expanding its marketing reach for its client companies and patent portfolio.

Relevant Relationships

On September 3, 2008, UAMS BioVentures announced that one of its companies had received a phase II Small Business Innovation Grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. The recipient company, Mesolight LLC, focuses a significant part of its research and development on nanoparticles that allow for the high-efficiency detection of radiation for improved radiological imaging applications, including Positron Emission Tomography (PET).
