Description

Oakland University's SmartZone Business Incubator (OU INC) provides entrepreneurial resources and strategic business solutions to develop intellectual property. The incubator supports existing and grows new technology-based and life science businesses with university resources, decision support technology, business counseling services and financial/capital acquisition assistance. In addition to the support of Oakland University, OU INC collaborates with many industry partners, providing business services, counseling, mentoring, pre-seed funding, access to training and business development.

Customers/Clients

Advanced Sensing Techniques, LLC is a Rochester-based, high-tech, small business that was formed to design and develop innovative sensors for industry. The company creates portable, wireless sensory systems for use in a wide variety of industries that, until now, have been unable to measure the manufacturing process due to limitations in prior sensor technology. A combination of factors, including continued falling prices and rising performance of computers and electronic components has made a new generation of measurement products and systems possible. EdEn Inc., an Honest Broker," joined the OU INCubator as an anchor tenant early in 2007. EdEn Inc. is a business services company that provides impartial project management services ranging from individual needs assessments to comprehensive full project execution in the following areas of specialization: grant investigation, writing and management; education partnerships and collaborations between academia and industry; training collaborations between training providers, academia and industry. As an anchor tenant, EdEn Inc. also is building upon its expertise to develop contract services and project management capabilities in a variety of start-up business development areas that will assist present and potential incubator companies. JADI Inc. is a Michigan company that was formed to respond to the R&D needs of the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center and the Department of Defense-Joint Ground Robotics Enterprise. JADI was selected as the first company of the OU SmartZone. Ka C Cheok, Edzko Smid, Paul Fleck and Thomas Stiglich compose the research team, and Jerry Atkinson, as the CEO, is responsible for JADIs business development activities and commercialization strategies. Cheok has many years of experience in real-time computer systems with intelligent control and unmanned robotics. Smid's research background includes modeling and simulation, digital signal processing and embedded real-time systems. Fleck has an extensive background in the integration of electronic hardware, software, algorithm development and packaging for electronic systems. Stiglich has more than 15 years of experience developing real-time embedded controllers for the automotive and transportation industry.
